THE PROBLEM
Coffee producers sell their coffee without knowing whether today is a strong market day or one of the worst. Their income depends on forces they cannot see and cannot control.
Coffee Producers
Sell Without Information
Coffee prices are set by global markets such as NYBOT and move in response to climate shocks, futures trading, FX movements and geopolitical sentiment. Small producers, however, only receive a single “price of the day” from local cooperatives. They have no tools to understand whether they should sell today, wait a few days or spread their sales over time.
"They sell their coffee without information… without knowing whether today is a good day or one of the worst."
01
Daily prices are driven by global exchanges, speculation and volatility.
02
Producers only receive the final price, without visibility into the factors behind it.
03
Without access to market signals, they cannot assess risk or future scenarios.

Why This Problem Matters
More than 540,000 rural Colombian families depend on coffee for their livelihood. Climate variability and market volatility make it extremely difficult to plan, save and invest. Traders and financial institutions operate with sophisticated data systems, while small producers rely on trust and tradition.
This information asymmetry:
Reinforces long-standing structural inequality for rural producers.
Increases vulnerability to sudden and unpredictable price shocks.
Reduces the
capacity to protect income consistently over time.
Limits long-term opportunities for education, health and growth.
“This project emerges in the gap between rural tradition and the tools that can protect the value of coffee growers’ labor.”
Beyond Markets:
A Social and Historical Context
Many coffee-growing communities in regions like Caramanta have experienced conflict, displacement and long-term instability. Yet they continue to grow, harvest and process coffee that is recognized for its quality worldwide. Providing them with better information is not just a technical challenge; it is a question of economic dignity and fairness.
